During the recent test run of the Woodpecker Mirai<\/a> at\u00a0our\u00a0premises, we\u00a0had the opportunity to ask a few\u00a0questions to Edwin Schoonderbeek, owner of the company, and Rick Kamphuis, factory manager, to find out more about the motivations and objectives of this\u00a0important investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A company rooted in the land with a clear vision<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

DE HOEF<\/a> is\u00a0not a company that\u00a0aims\u00a0at mass production. Their company philosophy\u00a0is clear: specialisation in complex work <\/strong>and tailor-made details<\/strong> for the residential\u00a0construction market. “We\u00a0mainly\u00a0specialise in special work,” explains Rick Kamphuis, “details and adaptations in the building, especially for apartment\u00a0complexes\u00a0which, as the name suggests, are very\u00a0complex in the way they are designed.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This specialisation translates into a precise market choice: exclusively<\/strong> B2B<\/strong>, working with construction companies in the central region of the Netherlands. “We prefer to work business to business because then we speak more or less the same language,” emphasises Kamphuis, highlighting how mutual understanding is crucial in an industry where technical details make all the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fifteen years of reliability: the basis for a new investment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The story between DE HOEF and Saomad does\u00a0not\u00a0begin with the Woodpecker Mirai. The Dutch company has\u00a0been\u00a0using\u00a0a Titanium<\/strong> for more than\u00a015 years<\/strong> and has\u00a0produced\u00a0around\u00a04,000 window frames per year<\/strong> at\u00a0peak times, currently\u00a0stabilised\u00a0at\u00a0around 3,000. “The machine works very\u00a0well,” the interviewees\u00a0comment, emphasising a key fact: zero significant problems in 15 years of intensive production<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This proven reliability was the first building block in the decision to renew the entire fleet of machines, now 15-20 years old, by continuing the partnership with Saomad through Dutch dealer Gerretsen<\/strong> Wijhe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This\u00a0philosophy of accessibility\u00a0is\u00a0also\u00a0reflected in the relationship with retailer Gerretsen, with whom DE HOEF has\u00a0established an excellent\u00a0relationship over time. A crucial\u00a0aspect for a company that, despite\u00a0being a ‘rather small player’, needs\u00a0quick and competent\u00a0answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If\u00a0we\u00a0have a problem, we know we can count on the Gerretsen service, no matter\u00a0if\u00a0we call them\u00a0at 23:00 at night, they\u00a0answer the phone and give\u00a0us\u00a0all the help we need,” says Schoonderbeek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This\u00a0level of support, described\u00a0as ‘very\u00a0important’, represents invaluable added value in an industry\u00a0where\u00a0downtime can jeopardise deliveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woodpecker Mirai: the answer to modern market challenges<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The investment in the new CNC machine is\u00a0not\u00a0only\u00a0dictated by the need for technological\u00a0renewal, but\u00a0responds to precise strategic\u00a0requirements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What\u00a0we\u00a0really\u00a0expect from this machine is\u00a0that\u00a0it\u00a0will make us more versatile,” explains Kamphuis. Current production requires ‘bundling things\u00a0together to be efficient’, limiting\u00a0operational\u00a0flexibility. The Woodpecker Mirai will\u00a0allow\u00a0us to be ‘more flexible in our production<\/strong>‘, which\u00a0is\u00a0crucial to meet the increasingly\u00a0customised demands of the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dutch window market now demands the use of CNC machines and machining centres <\/strong>as a production standard. “We\u00a0really\u00a0cannot\u00a0wait\u00a0any\u00a0longer,” admits Kamphuis, “everyone\u00a0is\u00a0doing\u00a0it, we\u00a0have to do it\u00a0too. This\u00a0is\u00a0not a race for profit, but a necessity to remain competitive in a ‘very\u00a0fierce’ market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘All\u00a0young people want to be influencers and don’t\u00a0want to be in the factory,’ Schoonderbeek realistically observes. The Woodpecker Mirai, capable of operating with a single <\/strong>operator and working ‘without a human presence<\/strong>‘ after working hours, is a concrete response to this\u00a0generational challenge. From four machines with four\u00a0operators, the company will be able to optimise\u00a0available human resources\u00a0while\u00a0increasing production capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initial feedback on the Woodpecker Mirai is positive<\/strong>: “We\u00a0have confidence in what\u00a0we\u00a0have\u00a0seen\u00a0here. The machine works,” confirms\u00a0Schoonderbeek. There are a few ‘details\u00a0that\u00a0we\u00a0need to calibrate’, but\u00a0collaboration with the Saomad technical team is\u00a0progressing\u00a0effectively to optimise the machine to DE HOEF’s\u00a0specific\u00a0requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
